It's safe to say air travelers are paying more attention -- and maybe giving a little more respect -- to flight attendants after the incident on a JetBlue flight that has mesmerized the country and put a new spotlight on the once-glamorous profession.

Crowded cabins, strict security and the lack of food and manners have affected flight attendants as much as passengers, but many fliers are just starting to realize their frustrations after Monday's altercation at New York's John F. Kennedy airport.

The details have already become legend.

Steven Slater, a JetBlue flight attendant, got into an argument with a passenger who was trying to remove a bag from the overhead bin while the plane was still taxiing, according to a source familiar with the incident.

The tension between Slater and the passenger apparently began in Pittsburgh, where the flight originated.

A female passenger "was struggling to shove her carry-on luggage [into the overhead bin] and she was competing with another passenger for the slot. They were shoving luggage around," said Slater's attorney, Howard Turman. "He [Slater] came over to assist, she started cursing and -- based on the information -- slammed the overhead luggage bin on his [Slater's] head," Turman said.

Turman said the female passenger said "F--- you" to Slater.

After the flight landed at JFK, Slater approached the same female passenger, who was retrieving her bag from the bin while the plane was still taxiing to the gate, according to a source familiar with the incident. Passengers are required to stay in their seats with their seat belts fastened until the pilot has reached the gate and gives the all-clear sign.

The passenger cursed Slater again, Turman said. Her fury grew upon learning she would have to wait at baggage claim to retrieve luggage she was forced to check at the gate.

Slater then got on the plane's public address system to say he'd had it, grabbed a couple of beers and slid off a plane through the escape chute.

He's in trouble with the law, but not with the public, where there's growing support for his dramatic exit.

"Wow, it's been very, very appreciated and it seems like something has resonated with a few people and that's kind of neat," Slater told CNN affiliate WABC.

'Constant belittlement'

Many flight attendants and airline industry workers have been leaving comments on CNN.com to voice their support for Slater and vent their frustrations about rude passengers.

"As a flight attendant for a major U.S. international flag carrier, I've been called a b**** and assorted other names while on board an aircraft, had food trays thrown at me, and treated worse in this job than any other. There are days after constant belittlement and attempted subjugation I wanted to do the same thing," wrote stewRN.

Others were concerned that the flying public sees them as little more than waiters and waitresses in the sky. For one, the indignities of the profession were just too much.

"I used to be a flight attendant. I left just after 1.5 years on the job. I was tired of not being treated with respect by passengers and management. After all these years, I still remember this kid saying loudly, 'Here comes the trash lady.' His father was laughing next to him," wrote a poster who identified herself as soundoff123.

Another former flight attendant recalled being horrified by the treatment airline employees receive from passengers.

"The flying public in America is the rudest bunch of people I've ever seen. In my short experience, I was cussed out, spit at, had things thrown at me, and [was] threatened with all sorts of violence. The traveling public believes they should be able to ignore rules and do whatever they want and you are a just a slave there just to serve them, that is until the plane crashes then you're supposed to be their savior," said ben5339.

Rudeness 'can be unbearable'

Flight attendants must put up with a lot that passengers don't know about, added a poster who said she worked as a flight attendant for seven years.

"The work rules that most airlines have instituted in these days of cutting expenses are a cause for a lot of the anger. Couple this with a public that is more and more unhappy with conditions in the air and you have a very volatile situation. Passengers need to understand that the primary purpose of a flight attendant is to evacuate the aircraft in event of an emergency and enforce the rules that the FAA has determined are necessary for passenger safety," wrote myket.

Rude passenger behavior isn't limited to the plane cabin, airline employees said. A gate agent vented about his experiences on the ground.

"I happen to work for a discount airline and must say the rudeness of some people can be unbearable at times. Some of you miserable people come to the airport with chips on your shoulders and make it your business to blame everyone else for your problems," wrote mzindpndt.

"We airline employees are just trying to do our jobs. Passengers, please leave the negative energy at home."

Speculation about Spyder’s continuing commitment to the Cloudveil brand had run rampant since the SIA Snow Show in Denver last month. Cloudveil did not exhibit at the show, and Spyder announced the introduction of a new technical mountain apparel line in cooperation with ski icon Chris Davenport.

“We want to maintain continuity of service and brand integrity through this sale,” noted Spyder CEO Tom McGann. “Cloudveil is a dedicated mountain lifestyle brand with a passionate consumer base. We wish to ensure Cloudveil retailers that the brand and its daily operations are passed off smoothly to the Windsong Brands team.”

To facilitate a smooth transition for Cloudveil’s existing dealer base, Spyder will manage the backend support, shipping, and customer service aspects of the Spring 2010 season.

Our new Board, which includes core outdoor industry executives, has chosen Jim Reilly, an investor along with Windsong, to lead the company moving forward.”

The transition of ownership is effective February 16. All intellectual property and assets are part of the acquisition deal. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

SnowSports Industries America (SIA) is reporting a six-year attendance high for the inaugural Snow Show recently held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.

The sold-out Snow Show attracted 18,932 attendees and featured over 3,100 booths representing 845 snow sports brands, including 125 new exhibitors. Throughout the four-day trade show, numerous television camera crews, photographers and reporters could be seen roaming the Show aisles to report on next season's hottest fashions, gear and accessories. Snow Show exhibitors were kept busy with appointments and interviews with 875 journalists in-attendance.

"Participating in the Snow Show exceeded our expectations. We were overwhelmed by the interest from retailers, distributors and the public. As a result of being featured in a local FOX 31 television report on the Snow Show a distributor came to us with a great opportunity," commented Brett Curtis of Manic Snow.

The 2010 Snow Show buying power index, measured by Leisure Trends Group, totaled 74.9% for the U.S. retail buying power. Total buyer attendance was up 9.6% from last year's Show with 4,561 buyers from 1,309 buying managements. The buying power is a measurement of U.S. retail sales from specialty ski and snowboard shops in attendance at the Show. An early stat from the Buyer Survey indicates that 95% of the buyers felt that the SIA Snow met their objectives and more than 50% of the buyers said the economy still has an effect on their business.

Snow Show audited retail attendance numbers indicated a notable increase in the number of retailers from the Rocky Mountain and Midwest regions compared to the previous year. On the flip side, there was a drop in West Coast and Northeast retailers.

"For the first year in Denver, in the middle of a recession, we're very happy with the attendance numbers. We were lighter in some regions but we hope they'll come back next year after hearing all the positive experiences people had this year," said David Ingemie, president of SIA.

"The Show wound up great this year. The Never Summer booth was constantly busy with both local and out of town buyers and Denver had enough options to keep it interesting," commented Mike "Gags" Gagliardi, Never Summer Snowboards.

The Snow Show officially kicked off on the evening of January 27th, when 1,600+ attendees and a select group of consumers previewed the hottest on/off slope fashions for next season at SIA's Snow Fashion Show. The music was loud, the lights were bright and the fashions were anything but demure with bright colors, prints and lots of style.

New product buzz on the Show floor included cutting edge technology heading to the Olympics and the continuing story of rocker or reverse camber technology for both skis and snowboards. Outerwear fashion could hardly be pinned down at the Show ? with as many styles and color schemes to match the diverse personalities that love snow sports. There was plenty of bright (even neon) colors, plaids, geometric shapes and creative prints bringing to life outerwear and apparel collections.
